This mural was created in recognition of Ireland’s most famous explorer and adventurer, Tom Crean, who was born in Annascaul, Kerry and played a pivotal role in three polar expeditions spanning from 1901 to 1916.
The intricate composition of the shapes within the mural represent the meandering, challenging and often obstructed path navigated by Tom Crean and the crew aboard the “Endurance”. The complexity of the image also mirrors the perplexing decisions and cryptic calculations made by Tom Crean during his polar expeditions. Therefore deciphering this visual puzzle becomes a contemplative act, inviting observers to step back and piece together their very own meandering impression ultimately leading to a visual discovery.
Darragh Kinch (Kinch Design Studio) is a graphic designer, visual artist and printmaker based in County Kerry. Darragh finds creative influence in the interplay between creativity, human connection, and cultural and historical events.
As a visual creator, he holds the conviction that the essence of art lies in its ability to bridge the gaps between individuals, communities, and diverse perspectives. “Art of all genres has a nourishing impact on the human soul and can affect how we feel and how we think”. He recognises this as a monumental capability and so tries to harness this transformative potential within his artwork.
